At the Wall, Sansa confronts Petyr Baelish about his plot to marry her off to Ramsay Bolton, he goes on to tell her that he was ignorant of Ramsay’s’ wickedness and begs her to forgive him. In return for her forgiveness, he offers to grant her full support of the Vale in her endeavour to take back Winterfell from the Bolton’s, but Sansa turns him down. While taking his leave, he tells Sansa that Blackfish; her great-uncle has taken back Riverrun with the Tully army and Sansa goes on to instruct Brienne of Tarth to head there and try to ally with Blackfish for their mission.
Meanwhile, in Vaes Dothrak, Jorah Mormont goes on to inform Daenerys Targaryen about his greyscale infection. He professes his love for her and Daenerys goes on to instruct him to look for a cure for his affliction, then come back to her so he can be next to her when she eventually takes over Westeros.
On the Iron Islands, at the Kingsmoot, Yara makes her claim to the Salt Throne, with the backing of Theon Greyjoy. Euron Greyjoy; their uncle shows up and also makes his own claim to the throne, but Yara accuses him of killing their father and he openly admits to it. Euron goes on to promise to conquer the whole of Westeros by getting married to Daenerys and giving her the Iron Fleet. After this, he is eventually chosen to be king. Theon and Yara flee the Iron Islands with the best ships of the Iron Fleet and Euron instructs the Ironborn to start building a new fleet.
In Braavos, Jaqen H’ghar goes on to give Arya a mission to kill an actress named Lady Crane, who plays Cersei Lannister in a drama about the murder of Robert Baratheon and execution of Ned Stark. Arya is visibly uncomfortable with the drama’s depiction of her father; Ned Stark.
Meanwhile, in Meereen, Tyrion and Lord Varys begin to notice that peace has reigned since the agreement with the Masters. In a bid to keep the peace, Tyrion calls upon the Kinvara; the red priestess, and persuades her into an agreement to preach to the people that Daenerys is the chosen one of the Lord of the Light. She goes on to inform him that she knows what really happened to Varys and why it happened to him.
Beyond the Wall, Bran Stark and the Three-eyed Raven see a vision that shows the Children of the Forest creating the Night King by stabbing a man with a dagger made out of dragonglass. Bran later confronts Leaf, one of the Children of the Forest as to why they created the White Walkers and she goes on to inform him that they were at war with the First Men and didn’t have many options at the time. Bran decides to view a vision in the absence of the Three-Eyed Raven. In his vision, he sees an army of wights under the leadership of the Night King who touches him in the vision. Bran wakes up to discover a mark where the Night King had touched him in the vision, then the Three-Eyed Raven goes on to inform hi8m that he must flee because the Night King is now aware of his exact location.
The Three-Eyed Raven starts to transfer knowledge to Bran but the army of wight eventually arrives. As they observe a vision of Winterfell, Bran hears the shouting of Meera Reed who is trying to save Bran’s body while the Children of the Forest fight back the wights. The Three-Eyed Raven goes on to advise Bran to take heed to her warning, so Bran splits his consciousness by staying both in the vision of the past and warging into Hodor at the same time, in the present. The Night-King enters the cave and kills the Three-Eyed Raven, just as Bran, Meera and Hodor flee the scene. Leaf and Bran’s direwolf; Summer eventually sacrifices themselves to fight back the wights in order to allow the rest to escape.
Hodor goes on to close the door to the hideout behind them, keeping the wights inside, allowing Meera and to escape with Bran. Meera shouts over and over to Hodor to “hold the door” shut, in order to allow them to escape. This eventually allows the wights to rip him to apart. In the vision, Bran gets exhausted from his split consciousness and accidentally wargs into a younger version of Hodor in the vision, who used to be known as Wylis. This causes a connection to be forged between the past and the present, and while Bran’s consciousness is in Wylis’ head, he gets struck with a seizure as he hears the repeated instruction Meera gives to Hodor to “hold the door”, and the words slur together to form “Hodor”, leaving “Hodor” to become the only words he can utter.
